Earlier this year the Government introduced reforms to the way social workers will be regulated in England. There will be new professional standards, training requirements and disciplinary procedures determined by the new regulatory body; Social Work England as well as the Department for Education will change how social workers in England fulfil their role.

On behalf of Abundance Centres (UK) members of our team attended this Westminster Briefing seminar to hear how the new standards will impact the regulation and development of children’s social workers across England. British “Social Work” impacts on minority communities in distinct ways that need careful observance and, in our assessment, calls for innovative community led strategies, tactics and operations to curb the systemic racism now commonly touted as implicit bias and such code.

If you are a person classified as a ethnic minority, respect the voice of the voiceless and you work in the field of Social Work our Trust is especially keen to hear from you, we are exploring the development of a uLearn Naturally Social Workers’ Co-operative Development Project and Forum. Let us come together to explore what we can do to effectively prepare for the coming changes and help protect vulnerable communities from the systemic failings that the sector (amongst others) refuses to face directly.

uLearn Naturally Radio Joined the Black Cultural Archive (BCA) to celebrate 3 years on the historic Windrush Square of Brixton (South London). This event was facilitated in partnership with Inspirational YOU and crew.

Since opening the doors to the only heritage centre in the country solely dedicated to Black heritage in Britain, they have welcomed thousands of visitors, from families of all ages to school groups. They have showcased five major exhibitions, heralding the achievements of Black Women, revealing the untold history of the Black Georgians to the ingenuity of Black British musicians.

The celebration welcomed local talent and performers from across the diaspora, it was a day of cultural heritage and enjoyment. There where live performances, fresh refreshments, the best in local art, craft and clothing stalls, books, children’s activities, face-painting, live music, and discussions.

Ethnic skin types: are there differences in skin structure and function? [#uLearnScience2016]

People of skin of colour comprise the majority of the world’s population and Asian subjects comprise more than half of the total population of the earth. Even so, the literature on the characteristics of the subjects with skin of colour is limited. Several groups over the past decades have attempted to decipher the underlying differences in skin structure and function in different ethnic skin types. However, most of these studies have been of small scale and in some studies inter-individual differences in skin quality overwhelm any racial differences. There has been a recent call for more studies to address genetic together with phenotypic differences among different racial groups and in this respect several large-scale studies have been conducted recently. The most obvious ethnic skin difference relates to skin colour which is dominated by the presence of melanin.

Join us this evening as Professor Donald Palmer reviews and simplify a ground breaking paper by Prof A. V. Rawlings. Let’s get to know some of the principle ideas behind this very revealing question.
